This week I have been learning about and considering active learning and its uses and applications in the classroom. This approach feels somewhat intuitive to me, because having been a struggling learner myself I have always somewhat abhorred "lecture style" teaching, and I have felt convicted when I find myself standing in front of a room and talking at a bunch of passive, listening, and most likely bored children. One quality of active learning that I especially like is establishing purpose by creating meaningful ways to help students understand the value in a given activity. As layer one that provides the teacher with the challenging task of then developing tasks that will be equally purposeful, useful, and engaging both in and beyond the classroom.
I reviewed an active learning activity whereby students created audio book reviews and media presentations and then were asked to provide feedback to other students about those very same projects. I used padlet to create a presentation about this activity. You can see the details on this padlet:
Active Learning Padlet
I can relate to teaching a bunch of passive and likely bored children! It's funny because I see the same behavior during our teaching inservice days. I think teachers are the worst when it comes to following directions and listening during a lecture. I think that it is best practice to have students participate in active learning activities especially for our diverse learners.
ReplyDeleteDo you feel that active learning is something that teachers must include in their classrooms? Have you incorporated it in the lessons you teach for resource?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the activities we researched for this blog post were similar. I love the idea of having a picture be posted on a bulletin board or wall with an audio filled message attached to a QR code. I really think this concept can lead to students exploring other teachers classrooms and even exploring concepts in the hallway on the way to class! All they need is there device and a pair of headphones!
ReplyDeleteI like that you mentioned a few types of instructional strategies that work and didn't work for you during your own education. I think it's important for teachers to remember that there are different types of learners and we must teach the best way for that student. Finding the correct activity for each student to make the most of the lesson is our job. Have you had the opportunity to create an active learning lesson in your classroom? Or as you said, "a way to establish a purpose" to your lesson that engages the students?
ReplyDeleteJames,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you create an environment where active learning is encouraged and implemented. Bored students don't learn near as well as excited and engaged students!
